Patrick Cairns

One of South Africa's most respected financial journalists, Patrick is a trusted commentator on a range of economic issues – most particularly investments, markets and behavioral finance. His work for Moneyweb over the past decade has established him as a leading voice in the industry, and he has built a reputation across the asset management, insurance, academic and investment banking sectors.

Although he engages predominantly with serious issues, Patrick brings an accessible and lively approach to any topic. He is an optimist by nature, and a pragmatist by choice. He believes that answers lie predominantly in simplicity rather than complexity. Apart from his journalism, Patrick is also a published short story author and playwright. In 2018 his two-act play, Hertzog Boulevard, was performed by local theatre legends Thoko Ntshinga and Ivan Abrahams at the Artscape Theatre complex.

Who will lead the way to an economic recovery in South Africa?

A new Presentation by Patrick Cairns South Africa's economy is in the weakest position it has been in since the 1994 elections. Under the Zuma administration, the country did not experience just 'ten wasted years', but ten years of economic degradation. It's clear that the country needs a different approach to restore its economic fortunes. Many economists have spoken about the need to introduce structural reforms, but unless the right environment is created, these will be difficult to implement and even harder to make stick.

To build a sustainable future, South Africa needs a new vision for what kind of a country it wants to be. What does that vision look like, and who can inspire us towards it? Can Cyril Ramaphosa lead South Africa into a genuine 'new dawn', or will the tightrope he has to walk between serving the country and serving his party end up as a noose around his neck? What role can business play? Patrick addresses these questions in an accessible and sober presentation that takes an honest look at where the country is heading, and its need for leadership that not only professes change, but epitomises it. He leaves with a message of hope in our ability to harness South Africa's unquestionable potential.
