Prof Harry Dugmore

Strategist, Communicator, Visionary

Few people are more connected to the pulse of South Africa and its future than Professor Harry Dugmore, leading trends analyst on political and economic climates and investment opportunities in Africa.

His published papers and involvement in high profile, long-range planning projects include working on the  Presidency’s “2014 - Memories of the Future” and “2025 -The Future we Chose” projects and helping develop Gauteng Province’s “Vision 2055” programme.  Various international presentations and conferences have  established him as an expert on Africa’s role in the changing global geo-political landscape.

Convinced that South Africa needs better job creation strategies, Professor Dugmore’s current research focuses include looking at how various technologies,  and in particular mobile phones, can promote rapid economic growth and sustainable job creation.

In addition to consulting to NGOs, institutions and business, Professor Dugmore started his career working with progressive trade unions and civic organisations. Between 2001 and 2006, he was co-programme manager of Khomanani, government's large-scale HIV and AIDS/TB and STI awareness campaign, and was commissioned by “Soul City”to review best practice internationally in terms of what really works in behaviour change strategies.

Professor Dugmore is the creator of  On the Money – the Big Five Secrets of Money Management, South Africa’s premier financial education programme, and creator of  the One day people management tune-up experience. He appears monthly on Redi Direko’s 702 and 567 Cape Town radio show, helping listeners Make friends with Moneyand get on top of their financial affairs. He’s also the author of the best-selling book Nelson Mandela, a Life in Cartoons and was part of the Madam & Eve cartoon strip team until 2002.

Professor Dugmore has a PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand and is  MTN Chair of Media and Mobile Communications at Rhodes University’s School of Journalism and Media Studies.

Having completed studies for the Presidency in 2003 and 2007, Harry’s political commentator presentation ..  “Take on South Africa” is a must-hear for business people intending to be around for the long haul.

Presentations by Dr Harry Dugmore:

Harry Dugmore coordinated the research and communication for the Scenarios 2025 Project for the Presidency (in 2007/2008) and has been a consultant on the Gauteng 2055 long-term planning exercise. He was also  the project leader on  a future scenarios exercise for Johannesburg City Council in 2003 and 2008, which led to a study in looking ahead and contemplating ‘challenges for Johannesburg in 2025’, including  infrastructure needs.

He teaches Risk and Scenarios studies Masters module at NMMU and a course on managing new technology in communications and media at both undergrad and postgrad level at Rhodes University .

He’s a very entertaining and comedic speaker and his presentation ‘Laughing all the way to the bank’ aka ‘lighten up and win’  usually has people rolling around on the floor.

As  an MC, Harry keeps it light and breezy, but it’s really worth having him throw in a 5 minute “whizz bang” on challenges facing South Africa and Africa on the way forward to 2025.

“Laughing all the way to the Bank” based on his radio show “Make friends with money”
“How to lighten up your workplace.”
“Diamond development – get all your employees to shine” – a sort of “people tune up.”

A professionally made corporate video can provide a platform for companies to communicate a message, demonstrate a product in action or express techniques and ideas to staff in an interesting and dynamic way. Corporate videos can do all of this for a fraction of the cost, as the film becomes a contained medium through which a company's message or product becomes accessible to a wider audience in a shorter period of time. more info »
