Lerato Mbele

Lerato Mbele is a BBC presenter and  correspondent, currently based in South Africa. She was recently appointed Anchor on the new BBC World TV Africa Business show. Prior to this position she co-anchored  “Newsday” on the BBC World Service, broadcasting to over 10-million listeners worldwide. 

Lerato also features on BBC Focus-on-Africa, the television programme designed to showcase the continent, and was recently appointed to the 18h00 to 21h00 Sunday night slot on recently launched  Power FM (98.7) radio station.

Previous positions include senior business anchor for the international network CNBC Africa and main anchor of  News@10 on  SABC 3, a programme that analysed the day’s headlines in depth.

Lerato worked briefly as a political analyst, during which time she was co-editor of the book Designing Democracy, published under the auspices of the Ford Foundation and SAIIA. The book was a collection of research and views on contemporary political systems and the challenges to democracy in Africa.

Although  her early career was in political journalism, Lerato has become a respected and widely recognisable financial journalist and uses this platform to raise the issues of investments, business and economic opportunities across Africa.

In 2012, Lerato Mbele was named a “New Generation African Leader” by the African Leadership Network. She has participated at the World Economic Forum as a media leader, and has spoken and moderated televised debates for the WEF-Africa,  the World Bank/IMF annual meetings in Washington DC,  the African Development Bank, the UN Climate Change Summit COP-17 and Rio20. She also  hosted all the televised presidential debates for the Nigerian Economic Summit Group in Abuja-Nigeria.

As an Ambassador for Change with the Southern African Trust, Lerato has campaigned against poverty. In 2006  she was voted one of the Top-100 South Africans by the Star newspaper.Lerato is a Chevening Scholar and graduated with an Msc Development Studies at SOAS –University of London.
