Colin Moss seen in a movie at the Sundance Festival in Toronto!

The Pretty Boy can be Ugly – Colin plays psycho cop in movie

Colin Moss took  a few days off from Idols at the beginning of September to attend the premiere of the movie The World Unseen at the Toronto Film Festival. The film adaptation of Shamin Sarif’s award winning novel had its first screening at the Festival on the 9th September and received excellent reviews … and a New York agent impressed by Colin’s handling of the role.

Set in the early 50s,  Colin plays a psycho cop in the height of the Apartheid era. The character he plays will surprise Idols fans, more used to the MNet marketing branding of Colin as “Pretty Boy Colin Moss”.

“It was quite fun playing a real bastard. I never knew I had it in me” says Colin. “I had to be a real bully, knock a woman down and shoot up a room. Quite a challenge but it was a really meaty role for me.”

The international cast of The World Unseen includes Bollywood legends Lisa Ray, whose role in the film Water  earned her a Best Actress Award from the Vancouver Film Critics Circle and Parvin Dabas (Monsoon Wedding).  Sheetal Sheth (Looking for Comedy in the Moslem World), Bernard White (The Matrix) and Nandana Sent were cast in other leading roles. Grethe Fox, David Dennis and Natalie Becker are among the few South Africans who landed roles in this British / South African collaboration.

When Sarif’s novel The World Unseen first hit the shelves it took the publishing world by storm and went on to win the Pendelton First Novel Award and the prestigious Betty Trask Award. The movie adaptation is an Enlightenment Productions Film in association with DO Productions. Producer Hanan Kattan (co-founder of UK’s Enlightenment Productions with Sarif) and Co-Producer Brigid Olen (co-founder of SA’s DO Productions with Marlow de Mardt)  teamed up on the project.

“This is my first substantial role in an international movie, working alongside great talent from Britain and Bollywood” says Colin. “So, when the producers asked me to join them in Toronto for the premiere I was thrilled. Fortunately I had just one week’s window in the Idols production schedule and Fremantle very kindly shifted promo dates around to facilitate my going. It was a great experience and I see we have a lot to learn from the way things are done overseas.”

Sadly, Colin’s dad, Richard Moss, passed away on Saturday 1st September but family, church and friends rallied round and the memorial service was held on Tuesday 4th September, with Colin flying out a few hours later on a 23 hour journey to Toronto via France.

“His dad was so proud of him and excited about Toronto. He would’ve wanted him to go” said Ronnie Whitaker of Quirky House. “With the launch of the local comedy  “Big Fellas” in November and the worldwide release of “The World Unseen,”    Colin is well on his way towards achieving his goal of full time acting. Acting was, after all, what he trained for.  Unfortunately, in South Africa,  acting is not a very stable profession and presenting roles have been more plentiful. But acting has always been his first love. When he completed his music and drama degree at the University of Natal, he intended becoming a Shakespeare actor.”

A professionally made corporate video can provide a platform for companies to communicate a message, demonstrate a product in action or express techniques and ideas to staff in an interesting and dynamic way. Corporate videos can do all of this for a fraction of the cost, as the film becomes a contained medium through which a company's message or product becomes accessible to a wider audience in a shorter period of time. more info »
